Patagonia | Hemp in the USA, A brief History.
One of the most durable and versatile fibers on the planet has long been one of the most controversial. Hemp's complicated history begins in 1970 when it was deemed a forbidden fiber. In 2018, perspectives started to change with the passage of the Farm Bill, allowing for commercial farming of hemp by U.S. farmers.
Still, the stigma around the plant remains. For an environmentally conscious company like Patagonia, incorporating hemp into their apparel is a no-brainer. The plant cuts out the use of pesticides/herbicides, irrigation, and needs a minimal amount of fertilizer to grow. Misunderstood is a short film that takes a closer look at this plant, and how it could be put to use in more than just outdoor apparel.
